Col. Shashi Shumshere JB Rana : Founder of Cambrian Hall School

In the year 1954, the late Col. Shashi Shumshere JB Rana (09.09.1931-12.07.88), son of the late Maharaja Judha Shumshere JB Rana- ex-Prime Minister of Nepal felt the necessity of opening an English medium Co-educational Day-cum-Residential School in Dehradun to cater to the educational needs of the children interested in receiving quality education within an  affordable fee structure. Realizing this Col. Shashi founded Cambrian Hall having classes Nursery to Class II on 12th July, 1954 at 12 Lytton Road, Dehradun with only five students on its roll and Mrs. Mainwaring taking over the challenging task of leading the school. Today, more than 1700 students, both boys and girls, hailing from different parts of India, are receiving education at the Cambrian Hall. In Cambrian School and has attached hostels, hospital, sports arena's and grounds.

  

Cambrian Hall is one of India's premier private schools, and is located in the district of Dehradun, now the capital of Uttarakhand state in India.Cambrian Hall is a residential-cum day, co-educational English Medium School and has all modern infrastructural facilities making it an international Standards School; it is certified by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ISCE), New Delhi. Cambrian Hall is located close to the Indian Military Academy and Forest Research Institute of India. The school has highly qualified and experienced teachers and a huge library with books and educational aids, covering all major subjects and subscribes to leading publications. Cambrian Hall has a sprawling campus of with range of in-house facilities. The school has two academic blocks, Jodha Block and Doutre Block. Jodha block houses 8th to 12th grades and has fully equipped modern laboratories for Computer Sciences, Chemistry, Biology and Home Sciences. The Doutre Block houses 3rd to 6th grades, an Art room, Junior Library and a computer sciences lab. There is a separate block for 7th grade. 

There is also an Experimental block has Motor mechanics, Open Air Theatre, Dance room and music rooms and the Senior Library. The school has a large auditorium that can accommodate almost 1000 students. The hostel for boarders is called the Shashi Block. The hostel have modern dining halls and a hygienic kitchen. Students are provided accommodation in dormitories according to their age and House Colours. The Principal, Vice-Principal, Bursar, Estate Supervisor, Kitchen in-charges and house masters live in the same campus but in separate quarters. The School also has a separate girls hostel for girl students, in proximity to the Principal's residence. The school believes in creating all around development for the students. Sports play an integral role in the manifestation of a child's character. School arranges for a wide range of games for students like Hockey, Football, Cricket, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Badminton, Cross Country, Athletics, P.T., Gymnastics and Table Tennis. The School also encourage students to come up with new ideas on games that can be introduced in the School.

Board of Trustees, Principals and Staff

The Cambrian Hall Educational Trust came into being in 1965 with late Col Shashi Shumshere JB Rana as its President. After Col. Shashi’s demise in 1988 his wife Rani Chandra Raj Laxmi has taken over as President of the Trust. The Trust has seven members who are highly experienced, enlightened and dignified and are contributing significantly for the growth of school by laying down sound and progressive policies to run it. The Principalship of the school changed hands from late Mrs. M Mainwaring to late Mr. M Doutre, Mr. EA Tuck, Mr. GW Mayer, late Mr. RC Singhal and Dr SC Biala. All these educationists were/are highly qualified with long and rich experience of teaching coupled with administration and ably assisted by talented, experienced and professional teachers.
