565th birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev

Guwahati : The event, the first mega one organised in the city by the Assamese community, will also see them promoting and propagating Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev's teachings. The Assam Association in the city, in collaboration with Srimanta Sankar Sangha, Assam, will be celebrating the 565th birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai on October 26 and 27. The event, the first mega one organised in the city by the Assamese community, will also see the group promoting and propagating the teachings, literary and artistic creations of the saint and scholar. As many as 200 devotees, scholars and prominent intellectuals from different parts of Assam will be coming down to grace the event.  Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev (AD1449-1568) has remained a colossal figure in the cultural and religious history of Assam. He was a poet, playwright, actor, economist, philosopher, and a social reformer who ushered in an era of Vaishnavism in the whole region. He united the people from all walks of life, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion through his unique creations like new forms of music (popularly known as Borgeet) and theatrical performances (known as Ankia Naat and Bhaona).

Srimanta Sankardev inspired the Bhakti Movement in Assam just as Guru Nanak, Ramananda, Kabir, Basava, Tukaram and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu inspired it elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent. His literary and artistic contributions are living traditions in Assam today. Deepen Rajkonwar, general secretary of the Assam Association in Mumbai, says, “Srimanta Sankardev’s democratic attitude, non-violent philosophy, humanity, and wonderful creative literature, art and culture have enriched the knowledge system of the present period as well. His high ambition to uplift the society by using quality knowledge not only enriched the society spiritually, but also developed culturally and socioeconomically.” On October 26, the programme will be held at Bunts centre at Juinagar, sector 24. “Apart from Bhajan Kirtana (known as Naam Prosongo in Assam), we are organising a discussion session among the prominent intellectuals coming from Assam and the residents of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. It will be followed by a cultural programme where classical music, dance and drama will be performed by a few renowned artists invited from Assam,” he says.

On October 27, the association will be organising a cultural procession to showcase their indigenous culture, starting from the Assam Bhavan to the Jain temple in Vashi at around 10am. “At around 11am, we have organised a seminar at the Assam Bhavan and various non-Assamese scholars from across Maharashtra will participate in it. In the evening, a similar cultural programme will be held at Jogeshwari.” Devasish Sharma, deputy resident commissioner at the Assam Bhavan and an advisor of the association says, “The core message of Srimanta Sankardev has a universal appeal and it is relevant in all parts of the world. He believed in uniting the people and not in breaking up the fabric of modern society into narrow fragments. That’s why we regard him as our messiah.” He added, “People in various parts of the country, including our north-east are demanding their own states.Various forces are trying to divide the country on various pretexts. Srimanta Sankardev however, spread the message of unity and love through his life. The celebrations in Mumbai to bind people.”
