CPRM to keep ‘Gorkhaland movement' demand alive

KURSEONG : The CPRM has been organising various campaigns across the hills in order to encourage the people as it feels they have become demoralised after the failure of the recent separate state agitation. The party is also looking to hold public meetings in order to reach out to the people. CPRM spokesperson Govind Chettri said, “Our people have become demoralised after the failure of the Gorkhaland movement. They supported various political parties for the statehood cause but in return they have been betrayed every time by those they trusted.” He said that even after getting the people’s unanimous support, the parties spearheading the statehood movement have always settled for a compromise by giving in to state and central government pressure.

This has lead to widespread frustration among the hill people and they have started to believe the statehood issue is a closed chapter, said Chettri. The CPRM will hence organise a number of activities to keep the movement alive and keep the people’s hope intact about a Gorkhaland state, he added. He further said it is important to garner support from other communities, especially the Bengali community, in order to achieve statehood. The CPRM will be holding a seminar on November 23 aimed at reaching out to various communities in the region and to secure their support for the cause.
