Referring to Barfung SDF candidate DD Bhutia, the SDF chief said, “Candidates from all communities have been given tickets by the party. The SDF is a party of the Sikkimese people and the welfare of all the communities is our main motto.”
Commenting on his own candidature from Rangang-Yangyang constituency, the chief minister said, “It was a long-standing demand of the residents of Rangang-Yangyang constituency and hence I have decided to contest from my birthplace as well this time.”
The SDF has been strongly criticised for the choice of candidates for the general election and even received flak from party supporters. Clearing the air on this, Chamling said some of the sitting MLAs have been given respite for five years and they would be appointed in responsible posts once his party forms the government again.
He also clarified there will be no changes in the Sangha candidate as widely rumoured and reiterated the party’s Sangha candidate is Palden Lachungpa as announced earlier. Chamling expressed confidence of forming the next government and said the SDF would win in all the 32 constituencies once again. “I am already planning for the next cabinet, the April 12 election is just a formality,” he said.
Talking about future plans of the party, the SDF chief said there will be land for the landless and two-storied homes for the homeless.
“Salaries of government employees will be increased three times while the wages of MR employees will be doubled. As many as 6,000 MR and work-charge employees were made regular this time and MR employees working for more than five years will be regularised in the next phase,” he promised.
To make the people of the state debt-free, the government will waive off loans taken by unemployed youth and farmers, added Chamling.
SDF Lok Sabha candidate PD Rai, sitting MLA Sonam Gyatso Bhutia and Barfung constituency candidate DD Bhutia also addressed the gathering. Further, 84 Sikkim Krantikari Morcha supporters from Barfung joined the SDF during the day’s meeting.
