AAGSU demands Gorkha candidates in Assam Bidhan Sabha Elections 2016
Guwahati : The All Assam Gorkha Students’
Union (AAGSU) the influential apex students and youth organization of
the Gorkhas of Assam demanded 15 Gorkha dominated Legislative
Assembly constituencies in the forthcoming Assam Bidhan Sabha Elections
from any political party endorsing its basic demand of Gorkha Autonomus
Council (GAC) in Assam to get support in 65 constituencies where Gorkhas
are deciding factor. This was stated by AAGSU president Prem Tamang in a
press conference at Gauhati Press Club yesterday. Elaborating his statement Tamang further added, ‘Any
political party who gives Gorkha candidature in the following
constituencies namely Margheritha, Digboi, Sadiya, Sootea, Nawboicha,
Bihali, Borsola, Mazbat, Tamulpur, Sarupathar, Duliajan, Tezpur,
Tingkhang, Rangapara, and Gohpur will get support from AAGSU and the
Gorkhas of the state. Besides the above Gorkha dominated constituencies,
35 lakhs scattered Gorkhas are deciding factor in 65 constituencies of
the state and AAGSU will take a stand in this election for Gorkha
Autonomus Council. Gorkhas previously had 2 cabinet ministers and 4 MLAs
in the Assam Legislative Assembly and currently 2 MLAs and one
Parliamentary Secretary in Govt. of Assam.
Addressing the press conference Central Executive Member
(CEM) of AAGSU Nanda Kirati Dewan said that the AAGSU’s marathon central
executive meeting and Extended Executive Meeting were held on Monday
and Tuesday respectively to decided on political stand of Gorkhas of
state where unanimously, it was resolved to demand Gorkha candidature in
15 constituencies in Assam. ‘Gorkhas of Assam won’t vote for any Party
but for Gorkha candidates across the state, any political party putting
up Gorkha candidate will get AAGSU support in that constituency’, Dewan
added.
AAGSU reiterated its stand on up-gradation of NRC and on
going verification that no genuine Indian Gorkha who has applied for NRC
should be left out under any circumstances. The press meet was attended
by General Secretary I/C Sanjib Chowhan, Vice President Sunil Chetri,
publicity secretary Raj Newar, Executive Member Mohendra Rai, Arjun
Chetry and Sonitpur and Tinsukia Dist. President Sanjiv Chetry and Numal
Chetry respectively.
