Gorkha community to celebrate 200 years of settlement in Dehradun

Dehradun : The Gorkha community of Uttarakhand would celebrate 200 years of their arrival in the Doon valley in a grand manner. One of the organisers of the Gorkha Bi-Centenary committee, Madhu Gurung said that the four-day programme would highlight Gorkha culture, history and music. The Gorkha Bi-Centenary celebrations would kick start on November 19 at Khalanga War Memorial located at Sahastradhara road. A Khalanga run would be held. The event would be flagged off by the Commandant Indian Military Academy (IMA) Lt Gen Balwant Singh Negi. The place holds historical significance that it was here 200 years ago the Gorkhas and the British East India Company fought a decisive battle that was to change India’s and Nepal's geography forever and marked the arrival of Gorkhas in India. The war immortalized the 600 Gorkhas who took on the might of 10,000 British troops. Gurung disclosed that a cultural parade would be organised at Bindal Bridge on Nove 20 which would weave its way from Bindal bridge to Clock Tower, through Astley Hall and end at the Parade Ground. CM Harish Rawat would formally inaugurate the Bi Centenary celebrations at Mahendra Ground on November 20.
