GJM women’s wing leader Karuna Gurung joins TMC

KURSEONG : Karuna Gurung, a senior politician and organising secretary of the Kurseong unit women’s wing of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, today formally joined the hill Trinamool Congress. A function was held in town today to formalise her entry into the party where hill TMC general secretary NB Khawas handed Gurung the Trinamool flag. TMC leader Mohan Tamang said Gurung quit the GJM alleging rampant corruption within the latter’s rank and file. He said several GJM-supporting households from various areas of Kurseong and its surroundings also joined the TMC today. 

Further, Tamang informed of the formation of an Ad-hoc Organising Committee of the TMC Kurseong unit comprising all the 20 wards of Kurseong Municipality. Karuna Gurung is viewed as an astute politician who was earlier also associated with the GNLF and the CPM. This March, when many GJM leaders and supporters abandoned the party for its rivals, the GJM leadership had given Gurung an important portfolio in the party in a bid to stem the exodus. She had been appointed organising secretary of the Kurseong GJM women’s wing on April 2 by Kurseong MLA Rohit Sharma in the presence of GTA members and GJM leaders.
