Gorkha Bi Centenary Mahaotsav : Aim and Concept of KHALANGA RUN
Dehradun : The KHALANGA RUN has been started by the Gorkha Bi Centenary Mahaotsav Committee,
Dehradun, in solidarity with the Khalanga Vikas Committee. The event is to mark the 200
years of Gorkhas in India and celebrate their spirit of valour and contributions to nation
building.
The 8.7 Kms route chosen for the Khalanga Run will start from the Khalanga Memorial on
Sahastradhara Road, Dehradun and end at the Khalanga hill top memorial. The Khalanga
Memorial are twin obelisks built by the British, one for their General and their ranks and
the other for their valiant foe, the Gorkhas. This is the only memorial the British have ever
built for their enemy.
The aim is to mark the 200 years of the Anglo Gorkha war that took place in the hills of
Khalanga, which in Nepali means the Battlement. The KHALANGA RUN will flag off the four
day Gorkha Bi Centenary Mahotsav which will be from 19-22 November. 2015.
The participants will be running with well known marathon runner from India Ms Roshni
Rai. Ms Rai has competed in several well known marathons across the world, and even
qualified the tougest Comrade Marathon of 89 kms that takes place in South Africa. A
seasoned runner, Ms Rai was the one who marked the route for the KHALANGA RUN.
If this is successful The Gorkha Bi Centenary Mahotsav Committee will add some more
distance to the Khalanga Run to make is a 10km half marathon event from next year to be
held as Dehradun Marathon.
