Namchi taekwondo players clinch 16 medals in championship

NAMCHI : The Namchi Taekwondo Dojang team bagged 16 medals (4 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze) in the 5th Janki Das Subba Memorial Spring Taekwondo Championship-2014 held in Kalimpong on May 11. The event was organised by JDSM Taekwondo Dojang under the banner of the Taekwondo Federation of India and the World Taekwondo Federation.
The 14-member team from Namchi participated in various and was led by coach Pradeep Mukhia, who is a black belt 3rd Dan.
There were several participants who were girls and the medal winners in the sub-junior category include Tajel Lal Singh (bronze), Smitika Sharma (silver), Ashimita Chettri (bronze), six-year-old Ashlesha Sharma (bronze) and Shawan Gurung (gold).
The junior boys’ and girls’ category saw Priyadarshini Jyoti Baniya winning a gold medal and a bronze medal, Shina Gurung (silver), Pranisha Gurung (bronze), while Pawandeep Rai bagged a silver and a bronze. Meanwhile, Sudha Pradhan clinched gold, silver and bronze and Pema Gyacho Sherpa won the gold and silver in the senior boys’ and girls’ category.
The judges during the contest included Sunil Biswakarma (black belt 1st Dan), Kajol Chettri (black belt 1st Dan) and Amit Pradhan (black belt) 1st Dan as well as representatives from the NTD.
